Patient Safety Hero Award

CHS's goal is to reduce avoidable harm by at least 80% by the year 2020. To help achieve this, CHS is fostering a fair and just culture that encourages reporting errors and events. In doing so, safety issues can be quickly identified.

CHS recognizes its staff, doctors, patients, volunteers and visitors who helped promote patient safety practices. The Patient Safety Hero Award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to decreasing patient harm. The award honors the commitment and enthusiasm for improving patient safety.

Maternity nurses at St. Charles Hospital were recognized with the 2019 Patient Safety Hero award for saving a baby’s life. Rosemary Jackson, RN, discovered a heart murmur in a newborn in her care. A team of dedicated nurses, a nurse practitioner and a nurse’s aide worked together to identify a potentially life-threatening heart issue and escalated the situation to ensure the baby was immediately transferred and treated. Treatment was successful and today the baby is healthy and happy.
