Making Strides in Memory of an Outstanding Nurse
Being a top performer at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk was personal for the “In Memory of Melanie” team. These Good Samaritan participants raised more than $2,700 for breast cancer awareness in tribute to their late friend and colleague Melanie Fickeissen. Ms. Fickeissen had been working at Good Samaritan as a nurse in the Surgical ICU for 11 years when she received a breast cancer diagnosis.
“Melanie was the kindest, most selfless person anyone could have met,” recalled Danielle O'Rourke, RN, at Good Samaritan. “Days before she passed, she was asking others how they were doing. She was always smiling and in a good mood and was an amazing nurse, an amazing friend, and I strive to be like her.”
A scholarship was established in her memory to assist others who wish to pursue a career in nursing called the Melanie Ann Fickeissen, RN, Scholarship Fund.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will have been diagnosed in the U.S. for 2019. With the exception of skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer type found in women.
